A New Scandinavian Gateway
Etihad Airways will fly the route four times a week. The service runs until 21 March 2027. The airline opened bookings on 12 August 2026, the same day it made the announcement.
The route connects Abu Dhabi with Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. Etihad confirmed it is Gothenburg’s first direct air link to the Middle East. Swedavia described it as the first direct connection between Gothenburg and the United Arab Emirates.
Etihad will deploy the Airbus A321LR on the route. The aircraft seats 160 passengers — two First Suites, 14 Business seats and 144 Economy seats. Etihad classes the A321LR as the newest aircraft in its fleet.
Timing suits both point-to-point and connecting demand. An evening arrival in Abu Dhabi gives travellers access to onward services across Asia. Destinations include Bangkok, Singapore, Bali, Shanghai, Taipei, Bengaluru and Colombo.
Why Does the Route Matter for West Sweden?
Gothenburg is Etihad’s fifteenth new destination in 2026. That pace shows Gulf carriers are still expanding selectively into Europe. They use narrowbody aircraft on thinner routes where widebody economics do not stack up.
For West Sweden, the service adds a direct long-haul-style business link. It also creates a cleaner corridor for corporate traffic heading to India and Southeast Asia via Abu Dhabi. Swedavia said the route will strengthen connectivity for the region, particularly to the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.
The airport also noted that many regional travellers hold family, business and personal ties in those markets. That existing demand reduces early-stage revenue risk for the carrier.
Etihad pairs the new European city with its Abu Dhabi hub and stopover offer. Travellers gain a short-stay option in the capital before continuing to their final destination. That bundle adds leisure yield to what is primarily a business and visiting-friends-and-relatives corridor.
What the Route Signals for Investors
The A321LR lets Etihad open thinner routes while keeping a premium cabin mix. That is the key strategic point for analysts watching Gulf carrier expansion into European secondary cities.
Gothenburg joins a growing list of mid-sized European markets now linked directly to Abu Dhabi. Each new route adds data on whether premium leisure and corporate traffic can sustain Gulf connectivity beyond the major hubs of London, Paris and Frankfurt.
Load factors, corporate uptake and onward connection flows through Abu Dhabi will be the metrics to watch as the winter season progresses. Strong performance here would support the case for further Scandinavian expansion by Gulf carriers in 2027 and beyond.
