Abu Dhabi strengthens its sustainable finance portfolio with a green bond for the Al Dhafra solar project.
Green Bond Issuance Overview

Abu Dhabi issued $870.75 million in green bonds to refinance the Al Dhafra Solar PV plant. The bonds have a coupon of 5.794% and mature in June 2053. This reflects long-term investor trust in GCC sustainable projects. Analysts say the deal boosts Abu Dhabi’s role in green finance and sets a benchmark for future projects.

Institutional Participation

Major entities participated, including Masdar, TAQA, EDF, and Jinko Power. Moody’s rated the bonds A3/A, showing strong credit quality. The issuance highlights growing interest in ESG-focused investments in the region.

Strategic Context

The Al Dhafra Solar plant is one of the largest in the region. It supports Abu Dhabi’s energy diversification goals. The bond helps fund low-carbon infrastructure and was featured during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026. This emphasizes the emirate’s ambition to lead in green finance.

Regional Implications

Experts expect the success of these bonds to encourage similar deals across the GCC. By linking investment to clear environmental results, Abu Dhabi sets an example for ESG-aligned funding. International investors can view this as a benchmark for secure renewable energy projects in the Gulf, with links to Asia and Africa.

Market Outlook

Analysts suggest green bonds in the GCC will see steady demand due to the focus on energy transition. Abu Dhabi’s issuance shows the depth of regional capital markets. Investors gain both financial returns and support for the emirate’s decarbonization plans. The deal aligns economic growth with environmental responsibility.
